Core C++ Topics on my blog
Hello there,
Last time I've introduced myself briefly and mentioned the rules, the schedule, and some core links about the blog.
Today, I'd like to describe the current range of topics that you can read on the blog and suggest a few notable posts.
The blog has around 300 articles, and every month I try to add one or two posts.
(In the past I could even publish 3...5 articles per month, but as of 2026 this pace is much slower).
As you may have noticed, I currently write about "modern C++". I realized that it's not possible to write about too many things, and I focused on more "core C++". For example, at the beginning of my blogging "career", I wrote about gamedev/visual studio/OpenGL/cpp.
That decision also connects to my professional story, since I don't write much OpenGL/gamedev anymore. So I won't pretend I'm an expert :)
A few notable and recent texts related to C++?
- C++26: Standard Library Hardening Experiments
- 7 Practical std::chrono Calendar Examples (C++20)
- 22 Common Filesystem Tasks in C++20
- C++20 Concepts - a Quick Introduction
- 15 Different Ways to Filter Containers in Modern C++
- C++20 Ranges, Projections, std::invoke and if constexpr
- const vs constexpr vs consteval vs constinit in C++20
- Runtime Polymorphism with std::variant and std::visit - a new technique available since C++17
- Lambdas: From C++11 to C++20, Part 1 and Part 2 and an ebook @Leanpub. - this is a long text about one of the most notable feature from Modern C++: lambdas. The articles show the evolution of this component, how the syntax changed, and what rules apply.
- The Amazing Performance of C++17 Parallel Algorithms, is it Possible? - article about possible performance improvements with C++17 parallel algorithms. With some benchmarks and examples.
- Notes on C++ SFINAE, Modern C++ and C++20 Concepts - a long article, took me several months to prepare and understand what all of that template magic does :)
- Custom Deleters for C++ Smart Pointers - Smart pointers are also useful in legacy code or in places where you have custom methods of resource deallocation.
- Smart pointers gotchas - summary of tricks with smart pointers.
- Top 5 Beautiful C++ std Algorithms Examples - one of my best articles, inspired by the talk from Sean Parent.
- And the list is growing...
At the end of 2012, I started my first article about C++ summary. In the articles, I gather the C++ implementation status, list of community events, new tools and resources valuable for C++ development
Here's the list so far:
- C++ At the end of 2022
- C++ At the end of 2021
- C++ At the end of 2020
- C++ At the end of 2019
- C++ At the end of 2018,
- C++ At the end of 2017,
- C++ At the end of 2016,
- C++ At the end of 2015,
- C++ At the end of 2014,
- C++ At the end of 2013,
- C++ At the end of 2012.
With this series, I realized I like to stay near the edge of the newest stuff. Understand what's going on in C++ World and help others to stay up to date with the language.
I could even go further. Not only mention feature status, meetings, new books... but describe new things.
That's why in 2017 I started a whole new series about C++17. There are eight articles plus a summary of the newest stuff from the language.
- Fixes and deprecation
- Language clarification
- Templates
- Attributes
- Simplification
- Library changes - Filesystem
- Library changes - Parallel STL
- Library changes - Utils
- Bonus & Summary
- Refactoring with std::optional
- Using std::optional
- Everything You Need to Know About std::variant from C++17
- Everything You Need to Know About std::any from C++17
- std::string_view Performance
- C++17 string searchers
- Conversion utilities - about from_chars.
- How to get File Size in C++?
- How To Iterate Through Directories
- and a few others...
C++17 in Detail @ Leanpub.
The book is also available in print @Amazon
I plan to continue with C++ topics: new features, refactoring into modern C++, understanding modern C++, and good programming practices and tools. I started with C++17 features, then we got C++20 in 2020, C++23... and now we can cover C++26 and go beyond.
Let me know what your area of interest in C++/programming is. Just hit the Reply button.
Next time, I'll share a few stories behind my older articles and also from other topics that I've touched on, not directly related to C++.
best regards
Bartek
