OpenGL, Particles and Other important topics on the blog

Bartlomiej Filipek

Hi John Doe

Last time I wrote about the current area of my focus: C++. But over the years I've changed the topics a bit.

For example, in the early days, I wrote mostly about game-dev, graphics programming. One of the best articles from that time is probably:
>> Select + Mouse + OpenGL
It's from 2012 and uses even Old fixed pipeline in OpenGL, still from time to time I get emails with questions about that code.

Since we're near OpenGL here's my other text:
>> Learning Modern OpenGL (@codeproject)
It was the time when OpenGL 2.1 become 'legacy' and developers moved towards the new world of OpenGL 3+. I described what the key points of that change are, and from what resources can we learn.
It was a massive success for me, as in the first day it got like 20k views (now it's more than 240 000 views)
In the future, I should probably write about post-modern OpenGL, as graphics programming changed a lot with Vulkan and DX12.

Also in 2015/2016, I wrote a more extended series of articles about particle systems. I always wanted to play with particles, so that was my chance to record most of my thoughts. I started with a demo, then went through "updaters", renderers and optimisations.
The articles are still valid, even after a few years! You can, of course, upgrade the rendered, but the core computing design should be still quite decent.

And the last article, directly related to gamedev/demos/graphics was this one:
>> The Matrix Updated
It's a reboot of my old Allegro project from 2003! I successfully compiled it with the newest Visual Studio and ran on Windows 10. It shows the Matrix letters effect with a 3d clock scene.
Here's the link to a youtube video from that demo: link here.

There's also one funny story: although I write mostly about C++, it was not that topic that gained the most viewers. That's how the internet works :)
In 2016 I wrote a general article about life without Google, how staying 'connected' all the time influenced my performance and what was the time when the internet was limited. For example, when we had only books to learn.
>> Coding Without Google
It was a massive hit and got like 90k views in a first few days.

Next time I'll write about my best resources I use.

best regards
Bartek
