Psychedelics won't do the work for you
I spent years fascinated by psychedelics.
And I still am.
They're some of the strangest substances humans have ever discovered.
They can profoundly alter perception, loosen rigid patterns of thinking and create experiences people rank among the most meaningful of their lives.
But there's something I've become much more interested in:
What happens when the drug wears off?
Because you can have an earth-shattering realisation on Saturday...
and be scrolling Instagram, avoiding the gym and arguing with the same person about the same thing by Tuesday.
I've experienced versions of that myself.
The insight can be real.
But insight isn't the same thing as change.
Your life is largely built from what you repeatedly do.
How you sleep. What you eat. Who you spend time with. Whether you move your body. Where you put your attention. How you react when you're stressed.
A psychedelic experience might temporarily give you a different perspective on all of that.
But eventually you have to embody it.
That's where I think the conversation around psychedelics needs to go next.
Less obsession with the trip.
More attention to the life you come back to.
