Fog blankets the area Sunday

Updated district football stands

Local football playoff races head into final week

With one week remaining in the regular season, district championships, home playoff games and the final postseason spots are still at stake for teams in LeFlore County’s football districts.

Here are the scenarios heading into Friday, Nov. 6, based on results through Week 9.

District 4A-4: Poteau can settle its playoff position with a win

Sallisaw has clinched the district championship, and Broken Bow is locked into second place. Poteau and Stilwell are tied at 4-2 in district play, followed by Ada at 3-3.

Poteau hosts Sallisaw while Stilwell travels to Ada. The results will determine the final two playoff spots:

  • Poteau and Stilwell both win: Stilwell finishes third and Poteau fourth because the Indians won their head-to-head meeting.

  • Poteau wins and Stilwell loses: Poteau finishes third. Ada takes fourth ahead of Stilwell on the head-to-head result.

  • Poteau loses and Stilwell wins: Stilwell finishes third and Poteau fourth.

  • Poteau and Stilwell both lose: Poteau, Stilwell and Ada finish tied at 4-3. Each would have beaten one of the other tied teams, sending the final two berths to the district-points tiebreaker.

Poteau enters the final week with 21 district points, Stilwell has 20 and Ada has 11. The Pirates can clinch a berth with a win, but they have not yet secured a playoff spot in every possible scenario.

District A-I-4: Panama, Pocola and Coalgate chase the title

Panama, Pocola and Coalgate enter the final week tied at 5-1. Vian is 4-2 after beating Haskell, 50-13. Those four teams have secured the district’s playoff berths.

The championship comes down to the Panama-Pocola matchup and Coalgate’s home game against Haskell:

  • Pocola wins: The Indians are district champions, regardless of Coalgate’s result.

  • Panama and Coalgate both win: Coalgate is district champion and Panama finishes second because the Wildcats defeated the Razorbacks.

  • Panama wins and Coalgate loses: Panama is district champion.

Panama finishes third with a loss to Pocola. If Pocola wins, Coalgate takes second even with a loss to Haskell: the Wildcats have beaten both Panama and Vian and would win a three-team tie on head-to-head results.

If Panama wins and Coalgate loses, Pocola takes second. Should Vian also defeat Hulbert, district points would determine third and fourth between Coalgate and Vian within the three-team tie.

If Panama and Coalgate both win, Vian can take third ahead of Pocola by beating Hulbert. A Vian loss would leave Pocola third and Vian fourth.

District A-II-3: Talihina has the championship secured

Talihina has clinched the district championship, and Regent Prep is assured of second place. The Golden Tigers host Liberty while Regent Prep visits Drumright.

Liberty can secure third place with a win at Talihina. Central and Gore, both 3-3, remain in the race for the final playoff berth. Central visits Porter, and Gore hosts Mounds.

If Liberty wins, Gore would take fourth by beating Mounds. If Gore loses and Central wins, Central takes fourth.

If Liberty loses while Central and Gore both win, all three finish 4-3 and district points come into play. Liberty currently has 30 points, while Central and Gore each have zero. If Liberty loses by at least 15 and both Central and Gore win by at least 15, all three would finish with 15 district points. Under the published tiebreaker procedure, a drawing would determine third place, followed by head-to-head results between the remaining two teams for fourth.

District 2A-I-3: Victory Christian still has work to do

Heavener and Spiro are out of the playoff race. Lincoln Christian has clinched the district championship, and Sequoyah-Tahlequah has secured a postseason berth.

Checotah visits Hugo, and Victory Christian hosts Sequoyah-Tahlequah. Those two games determine the remaining positions:

  • Checotah wins: Sequoyah-Tahlequah finishes second, Checotah third and Victory Christian fourth. Those positions hold even if Victory Christian defeats Sequoyah, based on the current district-point totals in that potential three-team tie.

  • Hugo and Victory Christian both win: Victory Christian finishes second, Sequoyah third and Hugo fourth. Checotah is eliminated.

  • Hugo and Sequoyah both win: Sequoyah finishes second. Checotah, Victory Christian and Hugo finish tied at 3-3. Checotah has enough district points to take third, while the final margins would decide whether Victory Christian or Hugo gets fourth.

Victory Christian therefore has not clinched a playoff berth in every scenario. The Conquerors can secure a spot by winning or by getting a Checotah win over Hugo.
