Why I love Kotlin
I've worked with a lot of programming languages over the years, but I've had a special appreciation for Kotlin.
One of my favorite things about Kotlin is how expressive it is! I don't just mean concise. I mean that the code can be reduced to an outstanding signal-to-noise ratio. With Kotlin's extension functions, lambdas with receivers, and type inference, the essence of our code can really stand out.
Another reason I love Kotlin is its emphasis on correctness. For example, its null-safety features give us consistent ways to deal with missing values. Value classes reduce the cost of creating unique types for simple values, which makes it easier to make sure we're passing the right value to the right function. And when it comes to coroutines, Kotlin's use of structured concurrency helps prevent accidental memory and resource leaks.
And finally, the Kotlin community is outstanding! I've been an active part of the community for years, and I've always really appreciated the kindness and encouragement from other Kotlin developers.
It's hard to narrow down my favorite things about Kotlin, but those are probably my top three. What about you? What do you love about Kotlin? Feel free to reply to this email to let me know. I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks,
Dave
