Crossing the Trillion Dollar Chasm
Who will be the first $10t company? The one that first crosses the trillion dollar chasm : building a $1t AI compute engine before AI erodes the legacy cash cow paying for the GPUs.
In the last few weeks, two CEOs have put a $1t revenue target on their businesses : Andy Jassy & Elon Musk. We are tracking each company’s cloud & AI compute engine toward $1t in annualized segment revenue1.
Andy Jassy, President & CEO of Amazon2:
“We believe that AWS can grow north of 40% in each of 2027 & in 2028, & be a trillion-dollar revenue business in the next 5 to 10 years.”
Elon Musk, on SpaceX’s Q3 call3:
“SpaceX could reach a $500b to $1t annual recurring revenue run rate by 2027.”
Meanwhile, growth rates are accelerating at every hyperscaler on businesses generating $30b to $50b per quarter4.
Assume current growth rates with a 15% annual decay & Andy Jassy’s guided 40%+ growth in 2027 & 20285. Google Cloud overtakes Azure in mid-2027 & passes AWS by the end of 2027 to become the largest of the three cloud businesses6.
On that trajectory, Google Cloud & SpaceX both cross $250b in quarterly revenue ($1t annualized run rate) in 2030 & AWS follows in 2032 : provided power, silicon & balance sheets hold.
Why did the market sell off two of the three hyperscalers on earnings day? Investors are worried that the legacy businesses will not be able to sustain the positive cash flows to continue the capex spend in sufficient time to realize the ROI7.
Philipp Schindler, SVP & Chief Business Officer of Google8:
“Look, in Q3, Search grew 12% year-over-year to $63b… it’s worth noting that the strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode.”
Alphabet’s search queries & visual searches are at record highs, with AI Mode queries running 3x the length of traditional searches, but Search & other advertising growth slowed to 12% ($63.3b), down from 19% in Q1 & 17% in Q2, as AI Mode monetizes at a lower rate than classic ten-blue-link search8.
Amazon’s retail & advertising machine faces the same question : whether external shopping agents bypass the search results pages where Amazon Ads generates $19.6b per quarter (up 12% in Q3, down from 26% in Q2).
Andy Jassy, President & CEO of Amazon2:
“The natural question is whether agentic shopping from external horizontal agents is meaningfully impacting Amazon Ads, & the answer is no. Few customers are doing much shopping this way yet, as the experience is still not great nor more convenient than coming to a retailer directly to research or one-click order there.”
Primarily Google & Amazon must cross a new chasm : refocusing capital & product around hardware, gigawatts & agentic compute while their historical cash cows absorb the shock of AI.
Microsoft is the only hyperscaler whose legacy enterprise franchise is expanding ARPU through AI faster than seat growth is slowing9. ServiceNow is seeing the opposite : its market cap fell 29% on fears of AI erosion of its core seat-based business10.
Google must prove that three-times-longer AI queries & autonomous shopping agents can monetize at the same yield as ten blue links. The first $10t company will be the one whose new compute engine reaches $1t before its old monopoly pays the tab.
Segment versus consolidated scope : Jassy’s $1t target applies to AWS segment revenue ($46.0b in Q3 2026, or $184b annualized), whereas Amazon consolidated revenue is already $201.9b per quarter ($808b annualized, mostly retail at a lower multiple). Musk’s $500b to $1t target applies to SpaceX consolidated revenue ($14.6b in Q3 2026, led by $7.6b in Super Intelligence). Assuming a 10x revenue multiple on cloud & AI compute, crossing $1t in annualized segment revenue supports a $10t standalone valuation. ↩︎
Amazon Q3 2026 earnings release & conference call (October 29, 2026). Consolidated revenue was $201.9b (+12% YoY). AWS Q3 2026 revenue was $45.98b (+39.3% YoY) with $17.77b in operating income (38.7% margin) & $578b in backlog. Amazon Ads revenue was $19.6b (+12% YoY, down from +26% in Q2 2026 & +22% in Q1 2026). ↩︎ ↩︎
SpaceX Q3 2026 earnings release & conference call (October 20, 2026). Q3 2026 consolidated revenue was $14.58b (+161% YoY) : Super Intelligence (SI : xAI, Grok, cloud compute agreements & Cursor) generated $7.56b (+830% YoY), Connectivity (Starlink) generated $5.25b (+69% YoY) & Space (Launch) generated $1.77b (+6% YoY). Reaching $500b to $1t of AI ARR at current monetization (about $17.8b annualized AI revenue per gw on 1.7gw of live compute at Q3 end) requires 28gw to 56gw of live compute, whereas Q3 capex of $19.59b (roughly $78b/year pace at $38b per gw all-in) funds roughly 2gw per year. ↩︎
In Q3 2026, Google Cloud more than doubled year over year, surging 103% to $30.7b as first-party model APIs reached 32b tokens per minute & Cloud backlog hit $561b. Azure grew 48% to $33.2b inside a $63.9b Microsoft Cloud quarter, with Q2 guidance pointing to 49% to 50% constant-currency growth. AWS accelerated to 39% growth at $46.0b ($184b annualized run rate), its fastest pace since Q4 2021, & SpaceX grew total revenue 161% year over year to $14.6b, led by its Super Intelligence segment, which rose 830% to $7.6b. ↩︎
Calculation : Projected Q3 quarterly revenue starts from Q3 2026 actuals (Google Cloud $30.7b at 103.0% YoY, Azure $33.2b at 48.0% YoY, AWS $46.0b at 39.3% YoY & SpaceX $14.6b at 161.4% YoY) & compounds forward assuming each year’s YoY growth rate declines by 15% (g_{t+1} = 0.85 * g_t). A standard 25% decay curve would be too conservative for AWS & Azure because both are guided to compound near 40% to 50% per year : for Andy Jassy’s prediction to hold, AWS must defy normal large-law deceleration by holding 40%+ growth through 2027 & 2028 on a $184b run-rate base, converting its $578b backlog as fast as it lands power & silicon, & decaying no faster than 15% per year thereafter to cross $250b per quarter ($1t annualized run rate) in 2032. ↩︎
Segment definitions across the cloud businesses include hardware sales as well as rental : Alphabet CFO Anat Ashkenazi noted on the Q3 2026 call that Google Cloud’s 103% growth ($30.71b) & Alphabet’s 32% jump in other cost of revenues ($35.1b) were “driven by hardware costs, primarily related to the sales of TPU systems,” alongside AI infrastructure rental & Google Workspace. ↩︎
Post-earnings stock price reaction following Q3 2026 earnings releases (October 28 to 30, 2026) : Microsoft -0.2% (0%), Amazon -12.0% in after-hours trading following its Q3 release & Alphabet -12.6% (-13%) on October 29. ↩︎
Alphabet Q3 2026 earnings release & conference call (October 28, 2026). Consolidated revenue was $127.6b (+25% YoY). Google Search & other advertising revenue grew 12% YoY to $63.35b in Q3 2026, decelerating from 19% YoY growth in Q1 2026 ($60.40b) & 17% YoY growth in Q2 2026 ($63.27b), & rising just $79m (+0.1%) sequentially from Q2 to Q3 despite Sundar Pichai noting that “our year-over-year query growth rate is the highest it’s been in the last five years.” ↩︎ ↩︎
Microsoft FY27 Q1 (calendar Q3 2026) earnings release, Form 8-K & conference call (October 28, 2026) : Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud revenue grew 17% reported (+18% in constant currency; +19% adjusted CC), with ARPU expansion across M365 Copilot, E5, the new E7 bundle (which reached millions of paid seats) & GitHub Copilot more than offsetting a slowdown in paid M365 commercial seat growth to 5% on softer E3 & standalone SKU execution. That enterprise cash engine kept Microsoft at +$18.63b in Q3 free cash flow on $45.2b of capex (including finance leases), whereas Alphabet swung to -$9.07b in Q3 free cash flow on $51.36b of capex ($195b to $205b full-year 2026 guide) & Amazon reported -$42.4b in trailing-twelve-month free cash flow on $77.3b of Q3 capex ($220b full-year 2026 guide). ↩︎
ServiceNow Q3 2026 earnings release & post-earnings trading (October 28 to 30, 2026) : shares fell from $150.13 at the October 28 close to $105.65 on October 30 (-29.6%) despite 20.5% constant-currency Q3 subscription revenue growth ($3.988b), as Q4 cRPO guidance decelerated to 18.5% constant currency & investors scrutinized seat-based software pricing in an agentic world. ↩︎
