Frontier intelligence. Half the bill. (Sponsor)

AI coding spend is growing fast. But teams shouldn't have to choose between giving developers access to frontier intelligence and keeping token costs under control.

Fireworks Nexus gives developers access to frontier open models in the harnesses they already use. With FireRouter, each request is scored and routed to the optimal model for the task, while difficult tasks can pass through to your closed provider.

Set up in minutes. Keep your existing workflow. Get more control over your AI spend.

Apple's HomeView Offers Tantalizing Preview of a Future Robotic Version (14 minute read)

Apple is already working on developing a higher-end version of its HomeView display with a robotic limb that can automatically swivel the screen toward whoever is speaking. The company's own advertising for the $299 HomeView makes a compelling case for why a motorized version is needed. The device was designed to be controlled primarily by voice. While the HomeView is a pretty nice offering for $299, its design clearly shows it was a product conceived years ago.
Weak Links Start to Show in AI Borrowing (9 minute read)

Virtually every major mutual fund company, insurer, and private equity firm, as well as scores of individual investors, has been buying up AI debt. Hyperscalers, which continue to borrow heavily, have been forced by investors to pay modestly more in interest in recent debt deals. The market is realising there may be a mismatch between the money committed and borrowed today and the ability to generate revenues down the road. An increasing number of data centers are being delayed by permitting issues, and in some instances falling through.

How to Formalize All of Mathematics (16 minute read)

It would be a terrible waste of resources to spend millions of dollars to formalize mathematics results in libraries nobody uses. Doing so could also disincentivize good research and productive use of AI, disrupt the social norms and practices research depends on, and set the field back decades. Several projects are now working to ensure formal libraries fulfill the community's mathematical goals. Within the next few years, most of mathematics will be able to be formalized in such a way that mathematicians can explore, build on, and make use of formal libraries. This will significantly extend their ability to develop and discover new mathematics.
We discovered something totally unexpected about the neural structure of consciousness (4 minute read)

Researchers have discovered a signal deep in the brain that richly represents a stimulus people are unaware of. This finding makes it possible to understand how a pattern of neural activity accesses consciousness. There are clear signals that correspond to both what is and isn't conscious. This makes it possible to follow both sets of footprints and track down the full machine for generating conscious percepts.

Build and scale a winning agent strategy (Sponsor)

Shipping agents is easy; keeping them reliable, governable, and improving is where enterprise AI stalls. LangChain's guide to the Agentic Operating Model (AOM) a step-by-step framework that shows how to align people, process, and technology, so enterprise agents improve as they scale. Get the guide.
Decoherence (48 minute read)

Decoherence is the accumulation of locally valid but mutually incompatible or redundant models within a system. It causes the cost of change to be dominated by translating among those models and preventing unintended side-effects. Decoherence grows relative to the rate of change of a system, and it increases faster the more decoherent a system is, resulting in runaway exponential growth. It rules out the specter of runaway recursive self-improvement, as decoherence both prevents AI from improving in a bubble and limits the rate at which it can improve outside of it. However, it also introduces a new kind of disaster called Decoherence Collapse.
Someone behind the software (3 minute read)

Good products carry something of the people who make them. The industry often talks about software as if it comes out of a factory, but two teams can talk to similar customers and have access to the same technology and still make very different things. The difference is how each team understands what they see and the style they go about building it. The founder background or company DNA shapes this a lot.

Will it be a golden age or a dark age for mathematics (and science)? (23 minute read)

Large language models have demonstrated remarkable abilities in generating mathematical proofs. This could lead to a golden age where a new generation of scientists is empowered, new STEM expertise is developed, and an open, collaborative, and intellectually independent scientific enterprise is preserved. However, it could also lead to independent human scientific activity progressively weakening, the production of new knowledge becoming increasingly concentrated in a small number of hands, and knowledge becoming alien to human understanding. The future will likely be a combination of these scenarios.
Why One of the World's Greatest Mathematicians Is on a β€˜War Footing' (20 minute read)

Terence Tao, one of the world's greatest living mathematicians, is currently doing very little math. OpenAI's recent finding in the mathematical field has left him feeling used, as he previously had a good relationship with many employees at the company. Now, he sees them as only using math to evaluate their models, and can't see a way to constructively engage. Despite OpenAI's releases, most problems at the frontiers of math are unsolved, and as math remains infinite, the difficulty of problems is boundless.
