Welcome back to AI Law and Policy with Professor Farahany!

I’m delighted to bring to you our guest speaker from class, Chloé Bakalar, who was kind enough to engage in a conversation just for you on AI ethics, law and policy.

She joined your live counterparts in class to talk about what it looks like to undertake AI ethics from inside the companies. And here, we talk about her career, her time inside of Meta (as the Chief AI ethicist), inside OpenAI (as the AI Lead until this past August), and how she launched her career in AI law and ethics.

Welcome back to Professor Farahany’s AI Law & Policy Class. You’re “enrolled” in the asynchronous version of my Duke Law class, where you get to keep your job and skip the debt. Every Monday and Wednesday, you get the content I taught live earlier that same day in my Duke Law AI Law & Policy class. The in-person class is 110 minutes long, so pace yourself as you work through the material.
Just joining us? Go back and take Class 1 (What is AI), Class 2 (How AI Actually works), and Class 3 (Open vs. Closed AI Models) first. Those classes teach the terminology you need to understand the class today.
If you landed a spot on the leaderboard, congratulations! Don’t worry if you haven’t yet. You CAN go back and fill in class cards for classes 1, 2, and 3, etc. as you work through them. I assign bonus points for the top homework before the next class posts, but it’s never too late to build a streak.

Based on feedback from all of you, here’s a question for our remaining classes this semester.

I can either continue to write up the classes here for you, or, you can join me, twice weekly for the rest of the semester for “live” 30 minute classes. Paid subscribers can join the “live” class (that is, a Zoom based class where we go over the lecture in brief, and you get to ask your questions), and for free subscribers I will record these sessions and post them for you here, post-class.

So, you get to vote. We have 6 classes left (one that will be delivered the written way on Wednesday, and 6 remaining after that) — do you prefer live 30 minute classes here, twice weekly, recorded and shared with you if you can’t join the live class, or do you prefer the written format the lectures have taken to date? Your vote will decide how the next class gets delivered … starting next week!

Here’s when the “live” classes would meet:

  • Monday, Nov. 9: 3pm ET

  • Wednesday, Nov. 11: 11:30 am ET

  • Monday, Nov. 16: 3 pm ET

  • Wednesday, Nov. 18: 2:30 pm ET

  • Monday, Nov. 23: 1 pm ET

  • Monday, Dec. 7: 2 pm ET

POLL
Do you prefer our remaining classes happen as live classes (with class cards and polls available after the class), recorded and distributed as 30 minute lectures/conversations after the fact, or the written format the lectures have taken to date?

Enjoy this special edition of AI Law and Policy with our guest speaker!

Class dismissed.

Homework.

  1. Fill in your class card for Class #18now to earn your points and keep your streak alive. Should only take a few minutes.

  2. You are legal counsel to a frontier lab and your client wants to voluntarily bring independent evaluators inside for red-teaming CBRN risks before Congress requires them to do so. Draft the one contractual provision pertaining to the independent evaluators you would insist on, and the one you would refuse to accept, in bringing an independent evaluator with access inside the company.

The entire class lecture is above, but for those of you who want to support my work (thank you!), go deeper in the class, have access to the class readings, access to the video assignments, achieve a certificate of completion, or reach me via virtual chat-based office-hours, the details are below...
