The Sequence Opinion - Issue #961: The AI Credit Crunch

How the financing supply chain works and why lenders are getting nervous

Oct 29

TLDR: AI companies pay for GPUs, buildings, and electricity long before revenue covers the bill, so credit bridges the gap, and lenders are becoming choosier about which promises they finance. This essay traces how money reaches AI infrastructure through bonds, private credit, and project vehicles, and why financing is getting harder: construction and power delays, aging hardware, loans that outlast customer contracts, concentrated customers, and a higher cost of money. It then uses Meta’s mix of joint-venture and equity funding and SpaceX’s xAI GPU lease commitment as two live tests.

It lays out the bear case, where cash flows disappoint on the schedule embedded in the debt and linked suppliers, customers, and financiers amplify the damage, and the bull case, where strong sponsors, equity cushions, and still-useful older chips keep capital flowing. The author’s view is that credit will increasingly decide who gets to build, and that the questions that matter are cash collection, remaining principal, contract renewals, and who pays when construction slips.

Financing the future would be a wonderful business if the future would agree to arrive before the interest payment.

The AI industry is discovering this scheduling problem. Companies pay for GPUs, buildings and electricity long before they collect enough revenue to cover the bill. Credit bridges that gap. When lenders demand higher returns or more protection, the bridge gets narrower.

In mid-October, Reuters reported a CoreWeave bond yielding roughly 15%. Meanwhile, Meta and SpaceX have announced enormous financing plans. These headlines fit together: investors are becoming choosier about which promises they finance. The question is how much uncertainty lenders will tolerate between buying a chip and getting their money back...
