OpenTelemetry: a Vendor-Neutral Observability Standard for .NET & More!

If you've never heard of OpenTelemetry, allow us to introduce it to you here: OpenTelemetry (OTEL) is a vendor-neutral standard for observability - that's a mouthful, what does that mean in layman's terms?
- "Vendor neutral" - you're not locked into a single vendor; all major application performance monitoring platforms such as Azure Application Insights, DataDog, New Relic, Elastic, Grafana Cloud, Prometheus, and can all consume and use data from OTEL.
- "Observability" - the ability to observe your application's dynamic behavior at run-time, through a combination of metrics, traces, and logs. Observability helps you understand both how and what your application did in service to completing an end-user's request.
OpenTelemetry in .NET
OpenTelemetry runs on all application runtimes, and since .NET 6 Microsoft has made OpenTelemetry the official standard for how metrics, traces, and logs should be aggregated for observability purposes into the forseeable future.
All of the base class libraries, including the HttpClient, SqlClient, ASP.NET Core, SignalR, and so on all support OTEL directly!
