Rush Hour in Gas City: Optimizing The Factory CI For Agents

The City Wire

This is my favorite City Wire post so far. Julian, the Gas City, Inc. CTO, manages the software factory behind Beads and Gas City by himself (as well as our pending commercial product: https://gascity.com/beads-team-server). The factory turns out PRs at the pace of hundreds a day. That brought the CI-at-scale problem that used to belong to companies with a building full of engineers. Google built TAP for it. Uber built SubmitQueue. Julian has a fleet of agents and a 192-core box in the cloud.

His post lays out the steps, one bottleneck at a time, so you can apply them to your own CI pipeline. Every step comes with a prompt you can hand your own agents. Along the way, he cut about $220,000 a year in compute.

And, in the spirit of OSS, he's opened our Bazel cache to the whole community, so contributors start from work that's already been built, allowing them to participate at this scale, too.

Check out the Julian goodness:
