In today’s digest, flu season is here, Election day is tomorrow, and how AI is reshaping startup paychecks. 💰

Today in New York
  • Tomorrow is Election Day! New Yorkers head to the polls Tuesday for the 2026 midterms to vote in races for governor, congress, and more. 🗳️ (NBC New York)

    • Early voting in New York State jumped nearly 70% compared to four years ago, and 60% in NYC.

    • Also on the ballot for NYC: Five proposals aimed at speeding up government decisions. (ICYMI, we broke ’em down last week!)

    • Check your poll site and view a sample ballot here.

  • Wash those hands, New York! Flu season is getting an early start this year. More than 10,000 cases have already been reported statewide, with infections rising particularly fast among children. 🤧 (New York Times)

    • Cases are especially prevalent in Borough Park, Brooklyn, and Manhattan’s East Side, while the state’s health commissioner declared flu prevalent a month earlier than last year.

    • Health experts are urging New Yorkers to get vaccinated now, as a new mRNA flu shot joins the lineup of available vaccines for adults ages 50–64.

    • Find a flu vaccination site near you here.

  • Parents of eighth graders, consider this your friendly reminder: NYC’s notoriously stressful high school admissions process is underway, with 700 programs across 400 schools to choose from ahead of the December 4 application deadline. 🎒 (The City Reporter)

    • Last year, 58% of roughly 68,000 applicants landed their first-choice school, while 82% received an offer from one of their top three picks.

    • Between grades, lottery numbers, auditions, and other criteria, navigating the process can feel like a full time guide, so check out this handy guide from Chalkbeat meant to help families make sense of it all.

AI Is Reshaping Startup Paychecks (and Org Charts)

As startups rethink how work gets done in the age of AI, compensation is shifting, too. Employees can command bigger offers without climbing the management ladder. 💰

We’ve sifted through the numbers. Here’s what stood out:

📈 Individual contributors are gaining ground: Employees without management responsibilities have seen the biggest increases in new-hire salary and equity benchmarks since early 2024.

  • For upper mid-level ICs, median salary benchmarks rose 18.5%, while initial equity grants grew 25.4%.

  • Compare that with senior directors, where salary benchmarks increased 6.3%, and equity grants rose 3.9%.

  • Senior roles still pay more, but the gap is narrowing as companies reconsider how many management layers they need.

AI talent commands a premium: Startups are offering increasingly competitive compensation to attract AI engineers. 🤖

  • At companies valued below $25 million, benchmark equity packages for new AI/ML engineers have grown more than 60% since early 2024.

  • Product and engineering remain the highest-paying functions, with median salary benchmarks exceeding $180,000.

Startups are hiring, just more cautiously: Across companies on Carta, new hires outpaced departures for 30 consecutive months through June.

  • Companies made 1.49 hires for every departure that month, adding a net 8,570 employees. Layoffs in H1 were also down compared with 2024 and 2025.

  • Founders are taking longer to start building their teams: The average startup made its first hire 581 days after incorporation, compared with 379 days in 2019.

💸 First hires are getting a bigger slice: Founders may wait longer to hire, but those early employees are receiving larger ownership stakes.

  • Over the past two years, the median first hire at startups on Carta received an initial grant worth 1.75% of company equity, up from prior analyses.

The NYC takeaway: For New York founders, a smaller team can still come with a competitive compensation bill, especially when recruiting AI engineers.

  • For workers, the findings suggest that specialized skills and hands-on contributions are gaining value alongside management experience. 🗽
