In today’s digest, smarter buses, an upgrade for trash, and new research on NYC’s AI boom. 🚀

TODAY IN NEW YORK

  • NYC buses are getting a new set of eyes. The MTA plans to equip up to 150 additional buses with collision-detection technology that uses sensors, flashing lights, and beeps to warn drivers when pedestrians, cyclists, or other objects get too close. 🚌 (The City Reporter)

    • The tech has been tested on six buses since 2024, with a proposed $1 million to $5 million contract to expand the program by next year.

    • Bus-bike collisions are down 16% this year, but with e-bikes, scooters, and cyclists competing for street space, the MTA hopes the technology will make navigating NYC's streets safer.

  • Brooklyn's trash is getting an upgrade. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the rollout of more than 700 large trash containers across Brooklyn Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, Dumbo, and Fort Greene, replacing sidewalk garbage bags with rat-resistant bins. 🐀(NBC New York)

    • The city plans to expand the program to six more community districts next year, with a goal of bringing containerized trash collection citywide by 2031.

  • Next stop: Boo York City! 👻 The MTA is getting into the Halloween spirit, temporarily renaming select subway, Long Island Rail Road, and Metro-North stations with spooky names from Thursday through Saturday. 🎃 (amNY)

    • Two stations in each borough, plus several commuter rail stops, will get Halloween-themed signs, while riders can snag limited-edition orange-and-black transit maps and collectible stickers featuring ghosts, bats, and the renamed stations.

The Numbers Are In: NYC’s AI Economy Is Booming

New York City’s AI sector is growing fast, and the numbers are making a strong case for the city’s position as a global AI powerhouse. 🤖

Tech:NYC and Accenture’s just-released report — aptly titled “Numbers outpace the narrative for AI in New York” — examines how AI is reshaping the city’s workforce, businesses, and startup ecosystem.

Here’s what the data tells us: 📊

AI hiring is skyrocketing: NYC job postings seeking AI or machine-learning skills surged 2.7-fold, from roughly 20,600 in the first half of 2025 to more than 55,000 in the first half of 2026. 🚀

  • AI skills now appear in nearly 14% of all NYC job postings, more than twice the national rate of 6%.

  • And 96% of surveyed executives plan to continue recruiting workers with AI expertise.

NYC’s AI startup ecosystem is thriving: CB Insights counts more than 2,000 venture-backed AI companies across the five boroughs, employing roughly 187,000 people and having raised a combined $78.5 billion. 🦄

  • The city boasts 74 AI unicorns, second only to San Francisco, with 15 reaching billion-dollar valuations in just the first eight months of 2026.

  • These companies added an estimated 26,000 net jobs over the past year, while AI firms leased more than 2.2 million square feet of NYC office space in the first half of 2026 alone.

💼 Businesses are putting AI to work: In a survey of 500 NYC executives, 94% said their organizations are testing, piloting, or scaling AI tools, with 46% already scaling applications that have demonstrated measurable value.

  • Productivity (52%), employee experience (49%), and innovation (44%) were the most frequently cited benefits.

  • And 88% said senior leaders are using AI in their daily work.

What about jobs? The outlook is (actually) encouraging: 79% of executives expect AI to increase entry-level hiring or keep it broadly stable while changing the skills employers seek. 🧑‍💻

  • Just 9% identify job elimination as a leading AI-related business challenge, down 27 percentage points from last year.

  • NYC’s workforce is adapting quickly, with occupational skill requirements changing about 50% faster than the national pace.

⚠️ But challenges remain: Implementation costs top executives’ concerns (60%), followed by data privacy and security (54%) and the difficulty of redesigning work (42%).

  • Still, 88% believe AI will strengthen NYC’s long-term competitiveness as a global business hub.

Policymakers are also taking notice: As NYC’s AI economy expands, state and city officials are moving to introduce new guardrails.

The big takeaway: NYC’s AI boom is translating into companies, capital, jobs, and real-world business adoption, with the city’s strengths in finance, healthcare, and other industries helping drive growth. 📈
