Today in New York
  • About 485,000 people across the state, including 165,000 in NYC, cast ballots during the first weekend of early voting, nearly double the number of people who showed up on the first two days of early voting four years ago. 🗳️ (NY1)

    • On the ballot: Races for governor, Congress, and state offices, plus five proposed city charter amendments covering everything from outdoor dining to city contracting. For a quick rundown of the candidates and issues, check out this voter guide or use this nifty app from Pillars for a complete overview of what’s at stake this election season.

    • Early voting runs through November 1 and Election Day is November 3. (Pro tip: those who vote on Halloween or NYC Marathon Day can snag limited-edition spooky or sporty "I Voted" stickers.)

  • Rockefeller Center has selected its 2026 Christmas tree, a Norway spruce from West Edmeston, New York, set to arrive in Manhattan on November 7.🎄 (ABC New York)

    • The tree will be decked out with more than 50,000 energy-efficient LED lights and a Swarovski star ahead of the December 2 lighting ceremony.

    • After spreading holiday cheer through January 9, the tree will be turned into lumber and donated to Habitat for Humanity.

  • The sun is officially clocking out early! Sunday marked NYC’s last sunset after 6pm until March 2027, with daylight disappearing even earlier in the coming weeks. 🌇 (Time Out New York)

    • Daylight saving time ends this Sunday, November 1, pushing sunset to around 4:52pm.

    • The sun won't set after 6pm again until March 14, 2027, when daylight saving time returns.

NYC's Economy: VC Booms Even as Hiring Slows

New York City’s economy has been sending some mixed signals lately. NYCEDC's latest Economic Snapshot shows venture capital investment on track for a record year, new businesses opening at a rapid pace, and offices filling up — even as the city’s labor market cools. 📊

Here’s what stood out:

VC funding is on track for a record year: NYC-based companies raised $13 billion in Q3, bringing total venture investment to nearly $39 billion through September. 🚀

  • That’s more than double the $17.8 billion raised during the same period in 2025.

  • At its current pace, NYC could attract $52 billion in VC investment this year, surpassing the previous record of $51.4 billion set in 2021.

New businesses are popping up: Roughly 8,300 businesses launched in NYC during Q1 2026, the most in 17 quarters.

  • About 1 in 8 NYC businesses started within the past year, a sign of the city’s strong entrepreneurial activity. 💪

Yes, but: Not every business is thriving. An estimated 8,800 businesses closed in Q1, the most since early 2023.

The office comeback continues: NYC’s commercial real estate market showed renewed strength, particularly in premium office buildings. 💼

  • Office vacancy fell to 12.3% in Q3, marking 10 consecutive quarters of declines.

  • Companies leased 36.9 million square feet of office space through September, the strongest start to a year since 2014.

  • Office visits reached 79.3% of pre-pandemic levels, rising to 86.7% for top-tier Class A+ buildings.

⚠️ But hiring is losing steam: NYC's private sector shed 23,000 jobs in September, bringing the year-to-date total to a loss of 16,300 jobs.

  • Job losses were concentrated in information, private education, and accommodation and food services.

  • The unemployment rate held steady at 4.8%, down from 5.7% at the beginning of the year.

The takeaway: NYC’s business and investment ecosystem continues to show strength, with record-setting VC activity and improving office demand. But a cooling labor market suggests the city’s economic momentum isn't translating into job growth just yet.
