Sunday 5
Hey pals, this is the kind of email my paid subscribers get every single Sunday with 5 endorsements—stuff I’m watching, reading, listening to, and sometimes even opportunities to gather together online and figure out the world together. If you think you’d like these on the regular, convert to being a paid subscriber today. It keeps me keepin’ on.
If you need holiday gifts for teachers, collaborators, colleagues, and extended family, may I recommend pre-ordering Jen Bloomer’s amazing calendars? Theme is WE GATHER and they are full of images that really make the world as we know it can and should be feel possible. Who doesn’t need that as they’re figuring out the carpool schedule for the week? Our community can use code COURTNEY10 for 10% off. Pre-order soon --they sell out every year!
Curious what my man is up to? Just a chill little thing like building an entire museum. They just announced the design and it’s looking pretty amazing.
Please join us for the biggest care-focused movie club ever (!!!) on Tuesday, November 10th at 9am PST // 12pm EST. Register for our live Zoom gathering, and you’ll receive a private screener link and password so you can watch Take Me Home at home before we meet (trailer below). I’ve seen it and it BLEW ME AWAY. We’ll come together to reflect on the film, the realities of caregiving, and the stories our culture needs to tell about care. I’ll moderate and we’ll be joined by Ai-Jen Poo, nationally recognized care activist and co-founder of Caring Across Generations, and Liz Sargent, the film’s writer, director, and producer. This is an exclusive chance to watch the movie for free before it starts streaming.
One of the people I met at the Take Me Home screening I got to go is Patti Maciesz, the creator of Bill the Patriarchy, a political art project that I had somehow missed. From the site: Maciesz began faxing her invoices and timesheets for nursing, changing diapers etc. to local and state officials in California as well as the federal government for her unpaid child care wages with a plea for universal child care. Her painted fax cover letters are addressed to the Patriarchy ℅ various government organizations. As line items in the invoices, she includes hours spent on housework and the opportunity cost of staying at home. So far she’s sent over 1000 faxes—every US Senator with a fax machine has received one!
