I Said Watch for a Blue Wave. It Was a TSUNAMI
Welcome to our Briefing Room Election Results special
Democrats have taken control of Congress, and it’s a much bigger win than anyone predicted. Statistically, it’s the Democrats’ most successful election since 1974. They’re on track for 55 or 56 Senate seats and a House advantage of as many as 30 seats. (I did tell President Trump that appointing me ambassador to Greece might have helped. Just saying.)
I break down the overall results, and then we get to Trump, who can’t take any of the blame for his hand-picked candidates losing, and losing BADLY. He says this wasn’t a defeat for him because he “wasn’t on the ballot.”
Then we get to the most insane results of the night. Texas’s 15th District, a seat Republicans gerrymandered to make safer, swung roughly 46 points to the left and elected Grammy-winning Tejano singer Bobby Pulido. Counties along the Texas-Mexico border swung as much as 76 points. Democrats won every statewide office in Texas, all the way down to land commissioner. Mississippi’s Senate race is the biggest nail-biter in the country, with the Democrat up by just 28 votes at 95% reporting. I also cover Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan (and Haley Stevens’ voting hat) and the “dummymander of the decade” in North Carolina. That’s where the House map went from 10-4 Republican to 10-4 Democrat, and the man running the House Republicans’ campaign arm lost his own seat.
