Silex : 3,000 stars, Bucharest, and see you in Toulouse

Alex Hoyau

Hello,

3,000 stars on GitHub

Silex, the free/libre visual editor for static websites, passed 3,000 stars on GitHub. A star is someone who found the project useful enough to bookmark it. Thank you.

Since canary.4, these contributions were merged and will ship in the next release:

  • ZhangXiao: Ctrl+Z now works when the focus is in a side panel and, in Firefox, moving a layer is undone with a single Ctrl+Z;
  • vict0r: a delay, the ease-out-back curve and more properties in the transitions of the style panel;
  • DangTAnh: fixes in the Silex MCP tools, the ones that let an AI assistant drive the editor;
  • Ankit Sharma, a first contribution: the server no longer keeps ZIP files that nobody downloaded.

Haven't tried v3.10.0-canary.4 yet? Test it on canary.silex.me and report on the forum what breaks. Want to contribute? Here are the good first issues.

Bucharest: agents are now no-code users

On October 17, Alex gave a talk at OmniOpenCon in Bucharest, to about thirty people. His starting point: "Whether you are pro or against AI, most users are now agents running oversized closed source models. What are we going to do about it?" His answer: learn to work with small models trained on open data, and let each person choose how much they hand over to AI. The talk was not filmed, but the slides are online.

Accessibility in a visual editor

Once you know which HTML you want, does the tool let you write it? Alex answers for Silex, with screenshots: alt text for images, the right HTML element, ARIA attributes, a block that opens on click without JavaScript, and what is still missing. The article is based on the 20-minute demo he recorded the day before his Paris Web workshop. Read the article on his blog (in French).

What comes next?

It is voted on roadmap.silex.me. Among the most-voted open requests: Tailwind CSS support, accessibility of the sites Silex makes (two contributions already in progress), and dark mode in those sites. Vote, or add what you are missing.

Toulouse, November 14 and 15: Capitole du Libre (in French)

Silex will be at Capitole du Libre, at ENSEEIHT:

  • Saturday 14, 11:00, room A303: the live design clinic run by Designers Éthiques, where Silex gets critiqued in public;
  • Saturday 14, 12:00, room A303: Alex's talk, WordPress as the back office and the front end built in Silex;
  • Sunday 15, 10:30, room B207: the workshop to build and publish a site, basic HTML/CSS needed, bring a laptop;
  • a booth in the associations village on both days, with Alex, Jean-Philippe Vinet and Brice Martin.

Around Toulouse? Come by the booth. Everything is on one page.

A hand for Mobilizon

Silex events, from the monthly show to Capitole du Libre, are published on events.silex.me, which runs on Mobilizon. It is free software for organizing events without going through the big platforms, maintained by the Kaihuri association. They are asking for donations to keep it alive. If you follow our events, Mobilizon is what brings them to you: support Mobilizon.

See you on the forum.
