Self-Host Weekly (30 October 2026)
Weekly Highlights
Moderators of r/opensource found themselves in hot water this week after announcing rules that would tighten the leash on AI submissions and effectively shut out non-English speakers who rely on AI for translation.
Unsurprisingly, the decision was met with a ton of backlash. Among the more common user complaints were the impacts it would have on smaller project maintainers – and the fact that Linux itself accepts AI contributions (Linus Torvalds contributed his first AI-assisted kernel patch just last week).
The lead moderator has since addressed the backlash, although nothing concrete has changed since the initial announcement. Unfortunately for the subreddit, alternatives from disgruntled users have already started popping up. And as with most communities, the AI-fueled identity crisis is likely to get worse before it gets better.
(For an interesting read, check out this personal blog post by Dan Brown, where the The Da Vinci Code author BookStack developer and now-former r/opensource moderator shares his perspective on the new rules and the challenges of moderating such a large community.)
Unrelatedly, a quick PSA for software developers: Please stop naming your apps 'Kept' or any other derivative of Google Keep (1, 2).
In other news and activity:
- The developer of PocketBase, an open source backend platform, released a new web-based git server for single maintainers called BugStage...
- ...just a few days before Soft Serve, a popular CLI-based git server, was archived on GitHub
- Frenck from Home Assistant officially confirmed they're merging HACS (community store) into the platform as 'Marketplace' in November
- A new report claims Proton’s CEO has been aggressively pushing AI adoption internally, leaving some employees concerned about the security of the privacy-focused platform
- RapidRAW, a popular image editor and Lightroom alternative, picked up an integration for Immich in a recent release
- Somebody developed a vibe coded Spotify clone dubbed Slopify that actually looks impressively similar

Content Spotlight
Meet RSS, a simple feed aggregator with a social-feed-like interface. Built by Dan Brown (the same BookStack developer from this week's intro) to meet a specific personal need, RSS skips the typical bells and whistles users might expect from a feed reader. Instead, it's intentionally developed as a low-maintenance project focused on a stable, basic experience. Features include custom feed names and icons, feed tags for organization, four layout modes, config via a single plaintext file, search, and mobile compatibility.
RSS can be easily deployed via Docker and doesn't require additional containers.
