Self-Host Weekly (16 October 2026)
You either die open source, or live long enough to see yourself become open core
Weekly Highlights
(Also, don't forget to complete my annual 2026 Self-Host User Survey if you haven't yet– we've already surpassed last year's survey with 4,200+ completed responses in just over a week!)
- Bitwarden switched to a dual-licensing model, and while they claim users won't be impacted, I find their "All current features are available in both versions" statement (emphasis mine) a bit concerning
- The Endurain project made the jump back to GitHub after migrating to Codeberg just a few months ago (perfectly reasonable explanation from the dev here)
- GitLab is warning users to upgrade after researchers discovered a vulnerability that allows unauthenticated users to execute code under specific conditions
- Despite last week's warnings, the LinuxServer.io team added containers for the Artcraft suite of Adobe alternatives (clearly they don't read this newsletter)
- Sonarr v5 is officially in beta and features an updated interface that doesn't look like it was ripped straight from the 90s
- A Redditor created a neat hardware solution that allows users to control Home Assistant automations from USB keyboards and devices (and no, I don't care if you can build a cheaper version yourself)
- The latest UniFi Network update picked up support for Matter and Thread
- Google announced they're giving users a private space in Google Play to upload their vibe coded Android apps
- Apple announced their own* lineup of smart home devices to be launched in 2027 (*created by LG and Schneider)
- Multiple people are developing PS2 Jellyfin clients for some reason (1, 2)
- I found my new favorite satire site – Open is the New Closed
Happy selfh.st/ing!
