The draw is done. Thank you.
Hello from Berlin! π
The prize draw in our 10-year quiz closed on Tuesday.
Thank you to everyone who played, and to everyone who sent a note
along with their answers. Those notes were the best part of the whole prize draw.
The quiz, wrapped
Many of you played and some got all ten right. The question that caught out the most people was the one about One feature returned to FLX in August 2023, seven years after it first appeared in Search Guard. 5. - > it was Audit Logging. The draw is done and the winner has been told.
Everyone who took part received the cookbook. If one of the recipes ends up on your table, we would love to see a photo.
Missed it? The quiz is still there until the end of the year, and the cookbook still comes with it. Know someone who would like it? Please forward them the link.
New release: Search Guard FLX 4.2.0
Out since 18 September, with support for Elasticsearch 9.5. The headline additions are Kibana authentication by host name, so one Kibana can serve several customers with different identity providers, extra claims from
the OIDC UserInfo endpoint for JWT domains, and tenant-scoped accounts in Signals. It also carries a security fix for transform API authorization, so we recommend upgrading.
Webinar of the month: How to Secure Elasticsearch in Production
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this is the session to spend it on. In September we looked at where default Elasticsearch security falls short.
This is the practical follow-up:
- authentication that scales,
- role-based access that holds up with real teams,
- multi-tenancy without leakage,
- audit logging your compliance team will accept,
- and the five misconfigurations Marc sees most, with the fix for each.
On demand. One quick form and it plays straight away.

π Snapshot visible, restore fails. Your SLM snapshots all report SUCCESS, and the restore still fails, because an S3 lifecycle rule quietly deleted objects that last night's backup depended on. How to spot it, what is still
recoverable, and why retention belongs in one place only.
π The true cost of an Elasticsearch security incident.Five ordinary mistakes, from shared admin accounts to audit logs nobody switched on, and what they cost once an incident is underway. Pairs well with the webinar above.
Looking ahead
November is budget and compliance season. Early in the month we will have something to share on securing AI and vector search workloads, and the compliance session takes over as the webinar of the month.
