Stop Firefighting and Start Deploying with Confidence π
Become a More Productive Spring Boot Developer π§ͺ
Hi Mailwal,
For the past 11 days, I've been showing you the testing problems I see in Spring Boot teams and how to solve them.
Today, I want to tell you about Testing Spring Boot Applications Masterclass - the course I built to teach this systematically.

Today, I want to tell you about Testing Spring Boot Applications Masterclass - the course I built to teach this systematically.
Why I created the Masterclass π§ͺ
For years, I kept seeing the same pattern:
Developers know they should test. They've read about JUnit and Mockito. But when it comes to actually testing a Spring Boot application - with database access, HTTP clients, messaging queues, OAuth2 security - they're stuck.
Most tutorials teach you how to test a calculator. That doesn't prepare you for the real world.
The answers exist - scattered across blog posts, Stack Overflow, and documentation. But nobody had created a complete path from "I don't know how to test Spring Boot" to "I deploy with complete confidence."
So I built it.

What is the Testing Spring Boot Applications Masterclass?
Testing Spring Boot Applications Masterclass is a 12+ hour on-demand video course with 130+ lessons that teaches you battle-tested recipes for testing real-world Spring Boot applications.
It's not about toy examples. It's about the patterns that work in production.

The Book Reviewr application π
Everything we test in the course is based on a real-world application I built specifically for this: Book Reviewr.
It's a self-contained system where users can:
It's a self-contained system where users can:
- Enter reviews for books
- Get review statistics
- Manage their reviews
The application includes everything you'll face in production:
- PostgreSQL database
- Amazon SQS messaging
- External HTTP APIs
- OAuth2 authentication with Keycloak
- Spring Security
All the testing recipes apply to any database, messaging system, or architecture. This is just the vehicle for teaching.
What you'll learn (8 modules) π
Module 1: Introduction & Application Walkthrough
Get familiar with the Book Reviewr application. Set it up locally. Understand the AWS and OAuth2 setup.
Module 2: Testing With Spring Boot Starter Test
Master the swiss-army knife every Spring Boot project includes. Deep dive into JUnit 5 (parallelization, custom extensions) and Mockito for mocking.
Module 3: Testing Database Access
Write efficient tests for your database layer using @DataJpaTest, TestEntityManager, and @Sql. Learn the pitfalls when the EntityManager is involved. Replace in-memory databases with Testcontainers.
Module 4: Testing the Web Layer
Test your REST controllers in isolation with @WebMvcTest and MockMvc. Test secured endpoints with ease. Verify authentication and authorization rules.
Module 5: Testing Further Slices
Test HTTP clients (WebClient and RestTemplate), business logic in isolation, and messaging consumers. Write custom test slices for your specific needs.
Module 6: Writing Tests With the Whole Spring Context
Integration tests with @SpringBootTest. Mock external systems that are required during startup (OAuth2 providers, external APIs) using WireMock. Structure your integration test strategy.
Module 7: Writing Web Tests
End-to-end tests with Selenide and Testcontainers. No manual WebDriver setup. Record videos of your tests. Make screenshots on failure. Start your entire Docker Compose environment for testing.
Module 8: Testing Best Practices
The module where everything comes together. Making the most of Spring's context caching to drastically reduce build times (this is where the 25min β 12min case study lives). Test naming conventions. Working with time. Mocking static methods. Visualizing test results in CI.

Who this is for β‘οΈ
The Masterclass is for you if:
- You're building Spring Boot applications professionally
- You know basic Java and Spring Boot but struggle with testing
- Your test suite is slow, flaky, or doesn't catch bugs
- You're stuck in firefighting mode, jumping from one bugfix to another
- You treat testing as an afterthought and want to change that
- You want proven recipes instead of piecing together blog posts
The Masterclass is NOT for you if:
- You're brand new to Java (prerequisite: basic Java and Spring Boot knowledge)
- You don't use Spring Boot
- You're looking for a course on developing microservices (this is testing-focused)
- You're already an expert and consulting other companies on test strategy
- What are you waiting for?
