Ko Sasaki for RoW

Welcome to Rest of World’s twice-weekly newsletter, The Global. We’re so glad you’re here.

I joined Rest of World after years working across media and technology, building products and businesses to support great reporting and storytelling around the world. What struck me here was simple: a globally curious audience seeking answers on how technology is changing the world and the stories nobody else is reporting. What you’ll read here is the start of that conversation about how tech is reshaping society, business, and geopolitics.

As publisher, that means spending most of my time on the decisions that determine how RoW keeps doing this kind of reporting for the long haul — how we reach new readers and build this community of the curious, what we ask you to support, and how our newsroom stays global and ambitious as the media landscape keeps shifting under everyone’s feet.

A few stories I keep coming back to: the culture clash at a Taiwanese chip maker in the U.S., how WhatsApp became an unstoppable cultural force, and a tour of the world’s last internet cafes.

The conversations we’re hoping to start are about more than just what’s happening in Silicon Valley boardrooms and data centers — they’re happening with people navigating change in Shenzhen, Singapore, and São Paulo, and in hundreds of other places largely left out of the conversation about technology’s future. Twice a week, we’ll bring you there: founders building around infrastructure gaps, regulators writing the rules as they go, communities absorbing change faster than anyone expected and in ways no one could have imagined.

If you have thoughts or want to start the conversation, just hit reply.
