Did you know the addresses on Ethereum 0x01 to 0x0a (addresses 1 to 10) are not empty?

The precompiled contracts live at those addresses. They allow you to do things that would normally cost too much gas, such as compute the SHA256 hash or do math on elliptic curves.

We wrote a tutorial explaining how they work — and Ethereum’s founder felt it was useful as a starting point for those unfamiliar with them. Here’s the relevant part of his post.
