Who is actually at risk for CTE?
Who is actually at risk for CTE?
Every few years, a new study reports finding chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in an alarming proportion of brains from former football players examined after death. The latest found its characteristic pathology in more than 90% of the brains donated from former NFL players. First described nearly a century ago in boxers as “punch-drunk syndrome,” CTE has since become most closely associated with professional football.
Most of us aren’t professional football players or boxers, though, so it is easy to file CTE away as just another occupational hazard of elite contact sports. But many of us played contact sports growing up, and some sustained a concussion or two along the way. So what exactly is CTE, and how relevant is it to the rest of us?
