Why all-in-one solutions don't cut it [Lesson 5 in WordPress Security]

Protect the weakest link

Now that you know how many security layers there are to your WordPress site, you're probably getting the sense that all those "Install Us and You'll Get Peace of Mind" tools may have been exaggerating.

Due to the many layers of your website infrastructure, it's impossible for one tool to equally cover all areas attackers would use to breach your site.

And therein lies our final lesson: selecting the right tools.

Are you using an all-in-one solution?

Peace of mind, as we said, is how they get you. And by "they," we mean attackers.

It's easy for cybersecurity companies to market themselves as all-in-one tools or plugins, but remember your homework:

Does the all-in-one tool protect every layer?

In most cases, the answer is "no."

Threats are advancing (dedicated solutions can focus)

It feels like attackers are always one step ahead. With new technologies and vectors of exposure, attackers are finding new ways to take control of sites. All-in-one solutions can't be dedicated enough to focus on one area and predict the next move attackers will make.

For example, Patchstack specializes in application layer security, which allows us to grow our network of security researchers and constantly find new vulnerabilities before others.

Other tools, which don't specialize in this layer, can't focus their resources on just this one area. They have to compromise.

And in cybersecurity, compromise means exposure.

Diverse threats require diverse solutions

Cyber threats come in many forms, targeting different aspects of your infrastructure. Network threats (like DDoS attacks), server vulnerabilities (like OS exploits), and application-level attacks (like SQL injection) each require specialized defenses.

An all-in-one tool might not provide the depth needed to effectively counteract all these varied threats.

Analysis & prediction

Different layers require different types of behavioral analysis.

For example, network monitoring looks for traffic anomalies, while vulnerability security focuses on detecting flaws in plugin code that lead to vulnerabilities.

Specialized tools excel at their specific type of analysis.

What does your WordPress attack surface look like?

Over 40% of websites that run on WordPress have at least 1 plugin vulnerability at this very moment. And, on average, over 30,000 websites are attacked every day, with 97% of all security vulnerabilities stemming from plugins.

The application layer is the weakest link.

And it's time to protect your site.

Prevent attacks with Patchstack

Don't wait for developer updates. Get immediate protection to stop attackers from getting access to your site through vulnerable plugins.

How does Patchstack help?

Patchstack monitors your site and when a plugin is vulnerable, applies real-time mitigation rules to block the exploit of that specific vulnerability.

It doesn't affect your site code or functionality.

With powerful protection modules and highly-targeted security rules, Patchstack will act as a barrier between your site and the attacker.
