Code isn't the only thing to get better at

How dare I say code isn't everything! This is a newsletter about mastering Laravel!

Code is only part of your job

Whether you work on a team inside a large company, or work as an independent contractor, the fact is that shipping Laravel code is not your entire job description.

So from time to time, a tip will be something less code-specific and more about working well within various aspects of a software project.

Don't over promise!

I like to plan out my week. It gives me an opportunity to figure out what I can get done, and then communicate that to the people I'm working with.

But there is a subtle trap here. If I think a task will take a day or two, I could say it will be ready Wednesday, thinking I've included a safe buffer. But why give a specific day at all? Just say "This is next". Putting a date on it introduces a new commitment, one which you might end up missing through no fault of your own.

Aaron calls me out on this all the time, and he's totally right.

Set expectations, but don't add unnecessary stress. Odds are, your client or teammate doesn't really care if you'll have something done Tuesday or Wednesday.

Here to help,

Joel
