Something is waiting behind the screen

They're Waiting in the Dark
Hey John,
We weren’t going to send this.
But after what happened last night, we think you deserve to know.
23:59
At exactly 23:59, it happened.
All over the world, cursors stopped blinking. Submit buttons went grey. Our call for papers closed, and somewhere in Cologne, a heavy door clicked shut.
Behind that door, something is waiting.
00:13
You're standing in front of the Cinedom. Im Mediapark 1. The square is empty.
The front door is open.
It shouldn't be.
You step inside. The carpet swallows your footsteps. Along the hallway, the booths are covered in white sheets, like furniture in a house nobody lives in anymore. On the floor lies a single badge ribbon. Someone wrote "JVM" on it.
You keep walking. Hall 5. The door is ajar.
00:31
The projector is running.
Nobody is in the projection room.
Every seat is empty. And still, you can't shake the feeling that someone is sitting in the last row.
Then the screen lights up. White letters on black. One single line of code:
boolean blindTicketAvailable = publishedSpeakers.isEmpty();
The cursor blinks. Once. Twice.
true;
You exhale.
00:47
That's when you hear it.
Behind the screen.
Footsteps.
Then voices. Soft. Slow. Singing, like a jump-rope rhyme from a playground long gone.
One, two, the lineup's coming through.
Three, four, they're standing at the door.
Five, six, they've got their slides and tricks.
Seven, eight, the tickets will not wait.
Nine, ten, you won't book blind again.
The screen moves.
Something presses against it from behind. A hand. Then another. The fabric bulges into the hall, shape after shape, until you see them. Silhouettes. Tall ones. Hunched ones. Lanyards swinging from their necks. One of them is holding a clicker.
They're the ones who answered our call.
A red dot crawls across the seats. Row 12. Row 8. Row 3. It stops on your chest.
You blink.
When you open your eyes, they're closer
Nobody has seen their faces. Not Yet.
And here's the thing about the dark, John. It doesn't last!
One day, the first of them will step out into the light. We won't tell you which day. And in that very second, the line on the screen will change.
false;
The blind tickets will be gone. Forever.
03:00
The lights snap on.
The hall is empty. No footsteps. No whispers. Just rows of seats, and a screen that shows nothing at all.
Was it a dream?
On the seat next to you lies a ticket. No speaker on it. No talk title. Just a date, 26 to 29 April 2027, and 30% off the regular price.
You know the rules now. As long as no face has stepped into the light, that ticket is yours to take.
Take it!
Before they come out.
Sleep well, John.
And if you hear someone counting tonight...check your feed.
Best regards,
Your JCON-Team
