Issue #265: Config 2027. Optimize AI credits. Getting hired playbook.
Save the date: Config 2027 is set for May 25–27 at Pier 80 in San Francisco, in person and virtual. Speaker applications are open until November 16.
On the All-In podcast, Dylan Field takes back his own Config prediction: “I said the ceiling will be raised by AI… That was wrong.” AI lowers the floor for making code, motion, and design, but the ceiling only rises when designers “choose to focus, invest their time, and to be bold.” With exponentially more software and flat app usage, that is now where products differentiate.
Harvey treats its Figma like a codebase: Agentic Brand Guidelines act as the top-level AGENTS.md, and each project folder adds only what it needs. On top of that, agents script, voice with ElevenLabs, and build hundreds of personalized films inside Figma Motion — one batch of 36 took 69 minutes.
Ridd tells the story of Jason Marsh, a designer with no big following or famous logos who landed multiple offers by “spearfishing”: picking a few companies, studying their product in Figma, and sending the hiring manager a working prototype that rebuilds a slice of it with one detail AI couldn’t one-shot. “Be specific, hyper specific… make yourself impossible to ignore.”
Figma’s own rundown of what Specs can do: data reports, PRDs, and hand-off context, outside context pulled in by an agent, rough ideas turned into a detailed spec, and a straight path to a coding agent through Figma’s MCP server, with a code layer built on top to refine.
Figma’s quick tour of code layers: turn a design layer into an interactive code layer, capture a live website with the Chrome extension, duplicate a layer to explore directions side by side, or drop in a prototype through Figma MCP.
Figma added iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 to every place you pick a mobile frame, from the properties panel to prototype settings, Make previews, and code layers.
Figma’s guide to spending fewer AI credits with the agent: scope prompts clearly, attach only the context the task needs, and start a new chat when you switch tasks, since long chats raise the cost of every prompt. For repeated jobs, turn the work into a generative plugin — building it costs credits, but every run after that costs zero.
Enterprise admins can now set default per-user access to paid AI credits at the organization and billing group levels, and manage credit access and limits through SCIM. They can also block people from creating Starter or Professional plans with company emails, and use new admin REST APIs to manage teams, folders, and files. Enterprise plans only, rolling out in the coming days.
Everyone says AI killed design, but in Darshita Patankar’s film DESIGN IS DEAD the real suspect is “good enough” work. It doubles as her portfolio and job pitch, with typography, illustration, and a classroom game she turned from a vibe-coded prototype into a world.
