A global technology company can build its defining advantage in Europe without finding every ingredient here.

The strategic choice is where each capability should sit. Europe offers concentrated scientific talent, leading universities and technical ecosystems. The capital and appetite required for rapid scaling may be stronger elsewhere.

Headquartered in London, with offices and labs in Boston, Basecamp Research is designed around that reality. Co-Founder Oliver Vince argues that Europe has a structural edge where AI meets biology, chemistry, materials, quantum and fusion.

The company draws on that scientific depth while building roughly half its team in the US, where Oliver sees greater willingness to finance ambitious outcomes before the full path has been proved.

This model places scientific talent and risk capital where each is strongest. It also presents a challenge for Europe: without sufficient scale-up capital, the region risks producing breakthrough science while the companies built from it shift their centre of gravity elsewhere.

At the EUVC Summit 2026, Oliver joined Lorenzo Cerchiof Singular, to discuss biological data, AI and how to build a frontier company across markets.

Their conversation leads this week’s edition, supported by further perspectives on building from European strengths. We then turn to the latest developments, events and funding activity across Europe’s tech and venture ecosystem.

This week’s focus

Build from Europe, not only in Europe

For founders: Build each advantage where it is strongest

Connect talent, R&D, customers, manufacturing and capital across the markets best equipped to provide them.

For investors: Underwrite the company’s global architecture

Assess where its structural advantage sits, what it must access elsewhere and whether those connections create resilience or dependence.

Acting sooner can turn a downturn into a turning point. Edouard Gouin, Co-Founder and CEO of Convelio, explains how the company responded to a roughly 25% art-market contraction by resizing its team, rebuilding its model and reaching its first fully profitable quarter.

Europe has deep pools of capital, yet too little reaches the companies driving its future growth. Dan Bowyer and Mads Jensen of SuperSeed and Karim Palant of UK Private Capital explore the barriers holding it back, alongside shifts in AI infrastructure, cybersecurity and the UK investment landscape.
