The Future of Software is Invisible

Kent C. Dodds

Hey John Doe,

SaaS is in trouble. Let me tell you why and what I'm doing to take advantage of the opportunity.

My barber's name is Victoria. Imagine she gets a message from her AI assistant: "You have four open slots Thursday. Want me to text regulars who are due for a cut?" She says yes, and her agent builds her a little app to do it, wired up to her Stripe and her iMessage. She never asked for an app. She just wanted her chairs full.

I'm calling this "Invisible Software". The future is not millions of developers writing code. It's billions of people whose agents write software for them, often without them even realizing it.

In the new episode of Better with Kent, I walk through that future with a demo, show where walled gardens get in the way, and talk about what it means for you as someone who builds products. (Spoiler: software engineering isn't going anywhere, but how you serve your users is about to change shape.)

So here's my question for you: if your users stopped visiting your site and only sent their agents, what would you change to stay afloat? Hit reply and tell me.
