Power BI Weekly

Newsletter Taster Edition

Welcome to the taster edition of Power BI Weekly - your single point of reference for a weekly round-up of Power BI news.

Take a minute to read through this editorial to understand the format of this newsletter. Below this editorial is the latest edition of Power BI Weekly, included so that you can see exactly what you're getting.

The format is inherited from our sister newsletter Azure Weekly and is also used by our 3rd newsletter Fabric Weekly - do check those out if you want to stay in the loop about all things Azure and/or Microsoft Fabric!

In the editorial, we highlight the week's official announcements and updates and cherry-pick one or two articles to feature.

The main section is (currently) split into 5 categories:

  • Data Prep, covering: Power Query (M), data connectors, AI-assisted data prep
  • Data Modeling, covering: DAX (Measures, UDFs & Calculated Tables/Columns), TMDL & semantic models as code, Relationships, Analysis Services, Composite models, AI-assisted modeling
  • Report Authoring and Interactivity, covering: Layout and formatting, Visualizations, Interactivity, Themes, AI-assisted authoring
  • Deployment, Security and Operations, covering: Workspaces and Apps, Deployment Pipelines, Gateways, Embedding, Security, Sharing, Licences, Admin & Governance, Developer Tooling
  • General, covering: Cross-topic content, Community events, Learning Resources & Certifications, Sample reports, End-to-end walkthroughs

Whilst we think we've caught everything in these categories, there may well be some gaps. If you notice any, do let us know.

We hope the newsletter proves beneficial to your day-to-day Power BI activities. We'd love to get your feedback on the newsletter, and hear any possible suggestions you might have on how to improve it.

Welcome to the 370th edition of Power BI Weekly! Sara Lammini Rodriguez has taken a deeper look at TMDL View on the web, the preview feature (announced a few weeks back) for editing semantic models as code directly in the browser, and it's another step in closing the functionality gap between Power BI Desktop and the Service. Also from the team, we've received the July release of the on-premises data gateway, which brings manageability and governance improvements and now lines up with the latest Power BI Desktop release.

On the community side, there's a pair of DAX performance articles this week. Phil Seamark has shown how swapping DISTINCTCOUNT for COUNTROWS can cut processing time by handling the bulk of single-line transactions more cheaply, reserving the pricier function for the smaller subset that actually needs it. And Carmel Eve has continued the Optimizing DAX series by walking through how the Formula Engine and Storage Engine work together, making the case for pushing more of your DAX logic into the fast, multi-threaded Storage Engine wherever you can.

Finally, Teo Lachev has laid out five ways to pull data from Fabric semantic models into Excel, from simple report exports to PivotTables, Power Query, and Copilot, each suited to a different level of Excel know-how - a useful comparison for reference.

As always, please send any articles to us on Bluesky or email, and see you again next Tuesday 🚀
