EDB Engineering Newsletter #23
Scroll down for a look at what the EDB Engineering team has been up to. But first, some of the industry news headlines that grabbed our attention 📰
News we’re watching:
Warehouse benchmark
A Estuary & CorrDyn benchmark ran 244 queries on 7 cloud data warehouses (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, Redshift, Microsoft Fabric, ClickHouse and MotherDuck) at 5 or more compute sizes each, on 1 GB to 1 TB of data, first with one person querying and then with up to 100 parallel sessions.
The results: https://warehouse-benchmark.estuary.dev/ (also, spoiler alert, there is no best data warehouse; the right one depends on your workload and your requirements)
Anthropic hack
October 29 Anthropic were compromised and a Visual Studio Code and Cursor extension used by tens of millions of developers for Claude access was delivering a remote access trojan via an SSH reverse backdoor. The malware allowed remote access to developer laptops and desktops. Anthropic has not informed customers, and silently deleted the backdoored version.
Security Incident Report PingCAP
Between September 9 and October 7, an unauthorized party used stolen service account credentials to access certain PingCAP internal systems, copy data, and obtain source code. PingCAP, the creators of TiDB, became aware of the incident on October 7 and began disabling the affected credentials immediately.

From the EDB team:
PostgreSQL 19: what’s important?
On the blog Tom Kincaid provides a bit of context on where the PostgreSQL community finds itself with the delayed release.
The above picture is from PGConf EU 2026, where Tom spent some time reflecting on 30 years of PostgreSQL, including some lovely anecdotes. All talk recordings of the conference should be published soon, and will be included in a future newsletter!
OAuth in Postgres 19 (and beyond)
Jacob Champion introduced OAuth in last year’s release. On the blog he talks about incremental improvements in PostgreSQL 19, and the work that is planned for v20, some of which the outcome from the PGConf.dev 2026 OAuth Working Group session.
Silent Throughput Ceiling in PostgreSQL
This October Vishal Sawale gave a talk at PgPune about how under heavy write load, he ran into a throughput saturation in Postgres. More CPU, more RAM and faster disks did not move the needle. Find out what solved the issue (resulting in 7.2x the throughput on the same hardware): https://www.enterprisedb.com/blog/finding-and-fixing-silent-throughput-ceiling-postgresql
Packaging (extensions)
Devrim Gündüz spent some time describing the ongoing modernization, expansion, and self-sufficiency of the PostgreSQL RPM repositories. This includes a series of significant updates designed to improve packaging infrastructure and user experience across distributions like RHEL and Amazon Linux 2023. All posts, with more to come in November:
ICLR ‘27 Workshop on Long-Horizon Agent Evaluation
EDB submitted a paper to the ICLR ‘27 workshop on evaluating long-horizon agents, co-authored with university and industry partners. The work focuses on how to reliably measure AI agents on extended, multi-step tasks, where standard benchmarks fall short.
AI functions reach the SQL Standard
At the October meeting of the SQL Standards committee on October 13, two AI topics were on the agenda. EDB colleagues Peter Eisentraut and Bilge İnce presented a discussion paper on model inference functions in SQL: https://www.enterprisedb.com/blog/ai-functions-reach-sql-standard
LatentShift: a room full of AI practitioners
The first LatentShift took place October 17 in İstanbul, Turkey. Bilge İnce is one of the organizers, and together with Jigar Mody kicked off the event with a keynote. Bilge shares more about this year’s “AI conference season”, on the blog: https://www.enterprisedb.com/blog/wrapping-ai-teams-conference-season
EDB at PGConf Asia
PGConf Asia 2026 is heading to Hong Kong from November 17–18. Several EDB team members will be presenting sessions this year. We had a sneak peek at the EDB-led sessions at PGConf Asia: Bruce Momjian, Tao LI, Gabriele Quaresima, Vishal Sawale, Ajit Gadge, Koichi Suzuki, Charly Batista, Nawaz Ahmed, and Jian He.
Other upcoming events include Cloud Native Denmark (19-20 November) with sessions by Gabriele Bartolini and Gabriele Rossini, and PGConf.PL (24 November), with Bruce Momjian, Piotr Kolodziej, and Torsten Steinbach representing team EDB. Bruce Momjian is set to speak at PgDay Mexico, and at PostgreSQL Conference Nepal, and Charly Batista is as well.
Until next time
We hope you enjoyed this edition of the EDB Engineering Newsletter! Closing out with this collage:
After Bilge was captured in this superhero pose during her PGConf EU talk, it sort of became a meme…
Until next time,
