Linting Your Design Tokens - The Where And The When

In my article, I outline the importance of implementing linting for design tokens to ensure consistency and maintainability within design systems. I emphasise that linting should occur at multiple stages of the workflow, from the design tool to pre-commit hooks and the CI pipeline. By establishing a structured linting process, teams can catch errors early, reduce technical debt, and improve overall quality. I encourage teams to start with the most pressing issues and gradually adopt additional linting stages as their design system evolves.

The design system contribution habits that build communities, not just components

Murphy explores the importance of establishing effective contribution rituals within design systems to foster engagement and collaboration. They emphasise that while many teams view contributions as a task, successful design systems rely on clear ownership, consistent rituals, and transparent communication. By implementing practices like office hours, design crits, and hackathons, teams can build stronger relationships and ensure that contributions are meaningful and aligned with the system's goals, especially as AI-generated outputs increase.

What Component Specs Leave Behind

Nathan talks about how component specs often lose, distort or invent design intent during transformation, using "round trip" testing—beaming specs back into Figma and comparing results—to expose gaps. By looping between generated specs and rendered assets, teams can distinguish between carried intent and silent losses, expose hidden assumptions, fix transformations, and clarify what the contract can't, won't, or doesn't yet support. This brutal test reveals that perfect losslessness isn't the goal; naming the gaps enables teams to build stronger contracts.

Design Systems That Get Used

Rob explains why a design system’s success depends on more than technical quality: it must fit the organisation, the products it serves and the team that will sustain it. The approach starts with existing tools, constraints and people, shaping each system to support lasting adoption rather than building the same system twice.

Design system documentation is everywhere, but belongs to no one

Grace explores how siloed documentation across disciplines creates problems AI amplifies through hallucinations and quality drift. She argues that design systems are uniquely positioned to establish documentation standards across the organisation, serving as connective infrastructure whilst resisting becoming a bottleneck for all organisational knowledge.

Dimensional scales: from base value to bounded range

Francesco explores how dimensional scales—spacing, sizing, and typography tokens—should be built on three foundations: a base value, a mathematical progression, and a bounded range. Using DTCG's dimension type with explicit value and unit pairs, teams can structure scales with t-shirt sizing or numeric names, leverage aliases to keep scales synchronised, and avoid common pitfalls like scales without logic or implementation details leaking into token names. A scale you can explain in one sentence is one your team will actually follow.
