The 2026 EO Handbook is here!

Explore the 2026 Special Edition: Satellite Earth observations in support of adaptation & resilience

The Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Earth Observation (EO) Handbook has a long and proud history highlighting the role of satellite EO in support of society’s greatest challenges and opportunities. This 2026 edition focuses on the central role of satellite EO in helping society address adaptation and resilience at all scales in the face of varied and increasing hazards and risk conditions.

Part I of the Handbook explains the role of EO in support of adaptation and resilience, including in relation to relevant international frameworks:

  • the various ways in which geospatial data, including EO, can support the different stages of the adaptation process;

  • the role of CEOS as the coordination body for civil space agency EO programmes globally;

  • other international activities advancing activities on adaptation and resilience on all scales;

  • some of the opportunities and challenges ahead for EO data to have maximum impact in support of society’s needs in these areas.

Room for the River Nijmegen – the most complex project within the Room for the River programme. In addition to water management measures such as the creation of a bypass channel with inlets, dyke lengthening, and nature development, this unique project involved the construction of three new bridges. Global Case Study Atlas

Part II of the Handbook comprises a global case study atlas, featuring powerful stories from around the globe from diverse users and diverse usage of EO satellite data on all scales, in support of their adaptation and resilience challenges and ambitions. Each of these articles is intended to be a stand-alone narrative and they may be read in any order. It is hoped that readers might find inspiration and resources for further study relevant to their own information needs and obligations.
