UX Bites #144 โ€” The Ahead Special

Built for Mars
Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹,
Ahead is sort of 'Duolingo, but for anger management'.
I'm too emotionally negligent to use it. But the app is good.
Here are some UX Bites you can copy.

1. A literal signature

When signing up to Ahead, you're asked to interact with a signature box to make a commitment to yourself, to use the app regularly.
Ahead

2. Hidden tap challenge

After completing lessons, you'll trigger this 'emotional tap' mini game. It also compares your personal best score to the all time high score.
Ahead

3. Reducing 'time to value'

When you open Ahead, they'll prompt you with an 'easy to answer' daily question.
This feeds immediately into a related lesson, reducing the time-to-value down to almost one click.
Ahead

4. Jam-packed with psychology

Right before you create an account, Ahead use three pieces of clever psychology: framing (x2) and compliance.
1. Framing: they're calling it the "Fair Trial" policy. It frames how you think about the rest of the screen.
2. Framing: they'll directly compare the cost of Ahead to a cinema ticket.
3. Compliance: using the FITD effect, the CTA label makes you agree that it's fair.
Ahead

5. Did you send it?

Ahead has an anonymous quiz to send to your friends.
If you try to proceed without copying the link, you'll see this prompt.
Ahead

6. Forced breaks

Ahead don't want you to binge all of the lessons in one day. Instead they force you to take breaks, and instead (hopefully) build more regular habits.
Ahead

7. We're learning from you

After answering questions, Ahead will literally show a notification that they're listening and learning from you. This reiterates how personalised the experience is.
Ahead

8. Unlock a treasure chest

After hitting certain milestones you'll be prompted to open a treasure chest.
These variable rewards are often "pro tips", which educate you about features. I also think being able to choose one (of three), makes it more engaging.

๐Ÿช„ Something to try: Copy UX Bites
You can now copy any UX Bite as an image, a link or a citation.
i.e., you can paste them straight into Figma, Claude, Google Docs and Microsoft Paint (maybe, I didn't try).
Have a great week!
P.S., to clarify, this isn't an ad. Built for Mars has no content advertising or sponsorships at all. It never has.
