Greater Bristol Business Bugle Issue 112
Dearest Bugle reader,
It’s lovely to see you here, thanks for coming. It’s Tuesday, and there’s much to learn, celebrate, and connect over. Read on for 90 seconds (ish) of intel on Greater Bristol.
Are you a founder or leader running a creative technology venture? Do you know one? The Createch Smart Scale is a fully funded 5-day programme to help you think bigger and build the next version of your business. Apply before 30/10.
On the theme of scaling, did you see the new Scale Up Institute research that shows how 333 women have founded or co-founded UK businesses that reached revenues of more than £50 million? Together, those businesses generate £44.7 billion in revenue and employ 285,000 people. From what I can see, the 2026 data was reported in the Times but has yet to be added to the Scaleup Reports.
Hidden Signals (audience insights) and Lux Aeterna VFX have been shortlisted. What for? Click to find out and share your congratulations.
Double congratulations to the fabulous Georgia Stewart of Tumelo (Modern proxy-voting technology for ambitious stewardship teams). Click to find out why!
Mayor launches £5m fund for nature. That’s the third multi-million-pound fund in as many weeks.
Screw This, Let’s Try Something Else podcast won a shiny GOLD award at the US Signal Awards. I’m particularly chuffed for Matt and the gang because their goal is one I share: to make more visible the incredible demonstrations of what we’re capable of when we work together in neighbourhoods and communities across the country.
Congrats to Jo Lansdowne at Watershed, who has been awarded £1.5m and selected as a UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellow. Her funding will develop systems of support that enable marginalised creative technology practitioners to succeed.
Are you in need of a videographer? We are spoiled for choice in Greater Bristol. I’ve worked with some really awesome ones over the years, so I thought I’d share a list. Please add your own recommendations in the comments too.
Skylark Media did some fantastic client case studies for Rocketmakers back in the day and are a B Corp.
I met Seren Media because they are the trusted video partner of David O’Coimin’s brilliant company Nook Sensory Pods, which will soon celebrate 10 years, featuring me. Rowan put me so at ease and clearly uses his natural history skills to draw out powerful stories.
Inov8 Studio uses whizzy tech to get all the best angles at the techSPARK SPARKIEs, the xChange Dinner I hosted for founders, and in so many other places. They focus on B2B Saas and tech brands.
Films @59 recently did a smashing job hosting a 56-hour podcast marathon completed by Ollie Collard + friends. They were the kindest, most caring, and helpful bunch. Usually, they offer camera rental and post-production services for content creators (and David Attenborough if the hero pic is anything to go by).
Under the Wing did a fabulous video for the Aardman Robin Robin trail in Southville, and they captured the Bristol Light Festival, which I was glad to feature in very briefly!
Tusko Films have been behind the camera at various events I’ve attended, and I see they’ve worked with local heroes Open Bionics and Science Creates too.
Floating Harbour is a film company based on a boat, with a brilliant event space to boot. They’re trusted by the UK Gov and Netflix, with a focus on sustainable film production.
There are some others that have crossed my path but who I’m yet to work with directly: Blakwave Productions, changing the faces of film + TV production, Wavelength Studio for your scientific storytelling… and no doubt many I have forgotten; please add them in the comments!
I thought lab-grown cacao seemed like a questionable idea, but if lab-based innovation is your jam, you might enjoy wine tasting and a conversation about synthetic wine at ‘Chemistry of Wine’ at Science Creates 3/12 19:00
That’s all for this week.
Warmest,
Briony
