Years ago I was teaching a one-day Python course in the US. I had prepared a full day of material, the kind of thing that usually fills the whole day when I teach it in Israel, where I live, and where lectures are constantly interrupted by questions, challenges, and requests for proof. That day in the US, the class ended at lunchtime. The Americans in the room were so polite they sat through everything I said without interrupting, and I got through an entire day's worth of material in about half the time.

I went back to my hotel thinking I'd done well. A few weeks later I realized the opposite was true. The class had been me delivering material without any back-and-forth, and without the questions that show what's landing and what isn't. Since then I've learned to make cultural adjustments to the number of slides I prepare, depending on where I'll be teaching.
