You can write Python but can't explain it?

When I ask developers what they're stuck on, I keep hearing the same four things. Not always in the same words, but always the same four things.

1. Even though I understand the basics, Python still feels like a black box.

2. When I have a problem to solve, I'm not even sure where to start.

3. I can't find clear, structured lessons that build real skill.

4. I want a mentor who can answer my questions when I'm stuck.

I've been asking this question for a long time. In corporate training rooms at Apple and Cisco, at conference booths where people stop by to chat, in replies to the Better Developers newsletter when someone hits reply to say hello. The four things above come back over and over, from different developers working on different projects at different levels of experience, and always the same four things.

That pattern is telling me something, and it took me a while to believe it. The problem is usually the education, not the developer. Most Python courses teach syntax and stop there.

You finish a course and you know how to write a for loop, but you don't know how the language works underneath, and when your mental model of what Python is doing doesn't match reality, everything looks fine until the morning it breaks. That's the day you're staring at a stack trace you can't interpret, and you realize you don't understand what went wrong.

One of the members I've worked with, Nick Lisena, is an Account Manager who moved into Python. He said the fix was never about learning more syntax. The Intro Courses have helped me tremendously to reinforce prior knowledge and fill in a lot of gaps that I had missed or misunderstood previously. Nick already knew the basics. What he needed was the understanding of how Python worked underneath, so he stopped guessing.

That's the model I teach: the picture of how Python works under the hood, so the code does what you expect when real data shows up.
