6 trends + something you can try this week

AI can generate a test. How do you know it’s a useful one?

News from the Community

Three talks, one honest realisation. After giving three talks in three weeks, quality engineer Jit Gosai concluded that he can’t tell teams exactly what to do, because he doesn’t know their context. What he can offer is a better understanding of how quality is created, maintained and lost, so teams can decide for themselves. He argues that matters more as AI changes how software gets built. He’s also shared slides, further reading and things to try from all three talks. Read Jit’s reflection →

Fewer places for flaky tests to hide. Playwright 1.64 landed on 7 October. A new --shuffle flag runs tests in random order to expose ones that quietly depend on each other, and gives you a seed to replay any failing run. Last month’s test locks can now cover a whole file or group, and locator.within() turns table-column queries into a single line. There are four breaking changes, so check the notes before upgrading. Read the 1.64 release notes →

AI found a decade-old bug. Is your test environment patched? PHP2Shell is a pair of critical PHP flaws that researchers found with AI. It went public on 21 October, with fixes in PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35. The bugs let attackers run code without logging in, or read secrets from server memory. Testers can help by confirming the patched version is the one actually running, since workers need a restart. Check staging servers and test containers too. Read the PHP2Shell breakdown →
